There are a hundred million
missing women globally.[i] In
India, in China, but also in certain ethnic groups in other countries. Prof.
Wendy Savage of the British Medical Association Council[ii]
has no problem with gender selection nor does Prime Minister Trudeau in Canada.
There are large ethnic communities in Canada who favour boys. These abortions
are also often coerced – with the unfortunate mother having to have pregnancy
after pregnancy, abortion after abortion, until she conceives the correct
gender. How is this ‘empowering’? What kind of ‘autonomy’ is that?
The Washington Post had an
article in 2012 which detailed how women carrying girls in some ethnic
communities are denied food and water until they agree to a termination. In
some cases, going ahead with the pregnancy causes a pregnant woman to be
ostracised and uncared for before and after the birth. [iii]
In many States in the USA you
may abort the child for any reason, even if the parents say it’s because they
don’t want a girl. It’s illegal in the UK, but so easy to get around, just give
another reason – you have until 24 weeks to think of something! As in the
horrible practice of FGM, a doctor from the community itself often performs the
illegal abortion.
Where are the Feminist
spokespersons? Where’s the outrage from those people who ‘care about women’?
This section deserves to be
much longer. But what can I add? There is so little information about this, so
little discussion, it’s as if it’s not happening, and these little women don’t
matter.
